Contract House LLC was founded to challenge the traditional billable hour model.
Most law firms that have adopted AI tools have done so quietly, using them to produce work faster while continuing to bill clients at the same hourly rates they charged before. The efficiency gain stayed inside the firm. The client never saw it.
Maxwell Holland and John Feeney saw this happening from the inside. Before co founding Contract House LLC, they both practiced at traditional firms, different firms, different experiences, the same fundamental problem. Maxwell was at a general practice firm serving small and mid sized businesses, drafting everything from simple NDAs to complex commercial agreements and business asset sales. The work was substantive. The model was not sustainable for the clients being served. He sat in meetings where partners walked through new AI drafting tools and explained, with genuine enthusiasm, how a contract that once took four hours could now be produced in forty five minutes. The enthusiasm was followed by the same four hour invoice going out the door. The partners called it a margin improvement. Maxwell called it the wrong answer.
John came to the same conclusion from a different angle. The firms holding out against technology entirely, running on outdated precedent libraries and institutional inertia, were not cheaper or more trustworthy. They were simply slower and billing their clients accordingly.
The businesses being underserved by both models were the same businesses. Small business owners. Startups. Independent contractors. Founders who understood that a bad contract could be more expensive than a lawyer, but could not stomach an open ended hourly engagement with no way of knowing what the invoice would look like at the end of the month. Many of them were people Maxwell knew personally, running businesses in Newport and the surrounding community. Watching them skip legal review on contracts because they could not afford the uncertainty of traditional billing was not something he was willing to accept as an acceptable status quo.
Contract House LLC was built around a single conviction: if technology has made it faster and less expensive to deliver high quality legal work, that benefit belongs to the client. The firm combines AI assisted drafting with a proprietary workflow developed specifically for contract production, licensed attorney review and approval on every single deliverable, and flat rate pricing that tells the client exactly what they are paying before the work begins. There is no hourly billing. There are no open ended retainers. There are no invoice surprises.
The Attorney in the Loop model is what makes this work. AI handles the drafting efficiency. A licensed attorney reads every contract, applies professional judgment, and approves every document before it leaves the firm. That is not an automated platform. It is a law firm that uses technology the way it was always supposed to be used: to serve clients better.
The name was deliberate. A house is a permanent thing. A resource. Something you come back to. Contract House LLC was built to be the in house legal team that small businesses have always needed and never been able to afford. Based in Newport, Rhode Island. Licensed in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Built for the businesses that have always deserved better.

Maxwell Holland grew up with an interest in how things work: systems, structures, stories, and the rules that hold them together. The justice system, administrative red tape, small business regulations: these are the invisible rules that shape peoples lives, and most people never stop to learn how they actually work. That is where Maxwell comes in. He studied at the University of Miami before completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, then earned his J.D. from Roger Williams School of Law, where he graduated cum laude.
Maxwell has drafted contracts across the full range of business needs, from simple NDAs and independent contractor arrangements to complex commercial agreements and business asset sales. He brings that experience to every engagement at Contract House, combined with a deep familiarity with the specific legal requirements of Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Outside of the law, Maxwell is drawn to art, film, history, live music, and books. He is rooted in Newport, Rhode Island, and is committed to the small business community he grew up alongside. Contract House is, in large part, built for them.
